They can spell it out loud - so why can't they write it down?
This is one of those moments that stops parents in their tracks.
Your child recites every letter — W, E, D, N, E, S, D, A, Y — and you think: they've got it. Then they pick up a pencil and write WENSDAY. What just happened?
What you're seeing is the gap between two different systems in the brain: one that holds a rehearsed sequence of letter names, and one that has to map those names to the sounds and shapes that make up written language. That second system is called orthographic processing.

When a child spells aloud, they're often reciting a memorised chain — like a song. But writing demands something deeper: the brain must activate each letter’s visual representation and sequence it on the page. This is where letter names and letter sounds create real confusion.
Take the letter C. Its name is "see." But in the word cat, it sounds like "kuh." A child who hasn't yet internalised that distinction may hear their own voice saying the name and write what they hear — not what orthography demands. Silent letters like the D in Wednesday are particularly vulnerable: you can name them in a chant and still have no sense of why they belong on the page.
This disconnect; fluent oral spelling but struggling written spelling, is one of the hallmarks of a specific learning profile that sits within the dyslexia spectrum. Crucially, it is isolated. A child with this profile may be a strong reader, a sophisticated thinker, articulate, and creative. Their spelling difficulty is not a reflection of their intelligence or their broader ability to learn. It is one specific processing pathway that works differently.
That matters enormously, because it means the difficulty is targetable. Orthographic processing can be built with the right kind of practice, and it responds well to intervention that is consistent and multi-sensory: seeing the word, saying it, tracing it, writing it. Over time, the brain builds a stored visual blueprint for each word, so retrieval becomes automatic rather than effortful.
The key message for families: the chant is a starting point, not the destination. If your child can recite but not write, they haven't failed to learn, they're simply at an earlier stage of a different kind of learning. And with ongoing, targeted support, that gap can close.
